WebDec 22, 2024 · We discuss the interplay between high-contrast Rydberg-state electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and optical pumping (OP) in a thermal 87 Rb medium. By pumping the population to one single hyperfine state, we can enhance the interaction strength and, in principle, amplify the EIT peak. Optical pumping is a process in which light is used to raise (or "pump") electrons from a lower energy level in an atom or molecule to a higher one. It is commonly used in laser construction to pump the active laser medium so as to achieve population inversion. The technique was developed by the 1966 Nobel Prize winner Alfred Kastler in the early 1950s.

In collaboration with a fellow physics graduate student, we conducted an experiment to study optical pumping and understand the basic quantum mechanics involved in single electron atomic transitions. WebOptical pumping is widely used to prepare atoms, ions or molecules in a selected quantum mechanical state. This can be either a specific electronic state (like in a gas or solid state laser itself) or a magnetic state. The latter is a prerequisite for laser magnetic field measurement and for monitoring the lung with NMR/MRT techniques involving ...
